Define problem: natural disaster, a natural event, such as a tornado, flood or earthquake that causes great damage and loss of life.
Here are eight tips for coping after a natural disaster.
Tip one, reach out. Reach out to your state and local community resources. If they don’t have the answers you’re looking for, they may be able to direct you to the right person.
Tip two, talk about it. Often talking about a stressful situation can help reduce stress and let others know they’re not alone in that situation. You have to feel to heal.
Tip three, spend time with friends and family. Whether in-person or by phone, sharing your concerns with friends or family can alleviate a great deal of stress.
Tip four, self care. Take a deep breath and moment for yourself. It is not selfish to be kind to yourself. You must have self care in order to be there for the ones that matter the most to you. Getting plenty of rest and eating a nutritional diet will help reduce the level of stress.
Tip five, limit exposure. Limit the time you watch, read and listen to news regarding the natural disaster. Staying focused on the natural disaster can sometimes add to our stress level.
Tip six, do something that you enjoy. Taking a hike, reading a book, or playing board games are fun and enjoyable ways to step away from the disaster and enjoy family time together.
Tip seven, one day, one task at a time. Try not to overdo it as this can sometimes cause undue stress. Pick a task and complete it before starting a new one. Sometimes making the load of everyday life lighter can alleviate a lot of stress.
Tip eight, ask for help. At some point in everyone’s life, they have to ask for help. There is no shame in this. If at any point during this traumatic experience, you need help, ask for help.
